Any interior is enhanced when mystery, craftsmanship, innovative style and drama are incorporated in the space. This may seem like an overwhelming challenge. However, it is really quite simple when one explores the intriguing world of Chinese antiques.
For example, what a treat it would be to be greeted by a 19th-century Elmwood altar table with averted ends and carved spandrels in the foyer of any home. Visitors are bound to be curious. Where did the table come from? Who did the marvelous carvings? What do the symbols mean? The imagination is immediately piqued.
The accessories on this beautiful table might range from a lovely piece of contemporary glass to an ornate collection of English Victorian Candlesticks. Hanging above the table one could place a gilt mirror, a contemporary abstract painting or a wonderful pair of antique Chinese shop signs with calligraphy reading "A dragon comes from afar and brings you a million years of good fortune". A home is always more interesting if it is a bit eclectic.
How many times, in exclusive trade magazines, have we admired a late 19th century cabinet with Chinese characters and intricate painting or a wonderfully carved stately four panel screen juxtaposed to white wool contemporary upholstery and steel and glass tables. What a dramatic statement!
In my own home and in my over 30 years as a designer, I select furniture and accessories to reflect the best of any period. They will then interplay with style and drama. The pieces must have soul and lasting value. A carefully chosen Chinese antique has all of these characteristics and should be lovingly considered and integrated in any style décor.
